Given by her Irish mother and Polish father, the name "Dawn Schumilas (Szumilas)" literally translates to "a gentle breeze in the forest at daybreak", which may be the best description of her music. Dawn writes in an acoustic folk style but influences of classical, jazz and Latin music are clearly audible. Performing with her spouse, classical guitarist Don Happner, Dawn's smooth and bell-like vocals are backed by the rich interplay of two acoustic guitars. Dawn has a gift for describing special places, memories and things of beauty in her songs and these vivid lyrics have brought her international recognition in both songwriting and poetry circles. Don Happner brings the skills of a highly accomplished classical guitarist to the arrangements and accompaniments and occasionally co-writes. Together, this Saskatchewan duo has carved out an unique sound in the folk/roots genre. Both seasoned professional musicians, their polished performances continue to delight audiences everywhere. |
